COSMO, a strategic communications and public affairs firm
Kumi Sato took over COSMO in 1987, which has grown into an award-winning strategic communications and public affairs firm with a specialized healthcare division, COSMO Healthcare.
In 2010, Ms. Sato became the first Japanese to be recognized by Campaign – a major trade publication – as Asia-Pacific Agency Head of the Year at the PR Week Awards in Hong Kong. Her other achievements include Outstanding Individual Achievement (Asia-Pacific SABRE Awards, 2011), Prospect Gold Standard Award for Professional Excellence (2011), and Business Stateswoman of the Year (Harvard Business School Club of Japan, 2012).
In 2013, she was appointed Advisor for the Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT), and is Co-Chair of the Global Council for the New York-based Asia Society. Ms. Sato founded BioCube, a think tank with a focus on healthcare and bio-related topics.
Ms. Sato is a professor for Business Breakthrough, Dr. Kenichi Ohmae’s online business school, and authored Aisareru Kaisha no Joken (2007) that compares views on CSR, and Communication Leadership (2012)
Ms. Sato has a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Wellesley College. Prior to COSMO, she worked at McKinsey and Company in New York. She is married to Donald P. Kanak and has three children.
